Masters of Sex!

Recently, I became a die-hard fan of Showtime’s Masters of Sex and was shocked to learn how on point Dr. William Masters (played by Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (played by Lizzy Caplan) were about our human sex response; especially about achieving an orgasm. Phenomenal thinking in a nutshell. Not only were they right some 50+ years ago, but even after their studies, many today still miss the mark about our human sexuality—with the exception of the porn industry.

First and foremost, it’s human nature for us to enjoy sexual pleasure, stimulation, and an orgasm. Even if you chose to ignore and fight your sexual desires, or bury them a million feet deep; if you are sexually charged, there is nothing that you can do to stop it. Sorry!!

Our bodies were designed to enjoy and achieve orgasm, by way of sexual stimulation. Daah! If this was not a natural thing to do, our bodies would not respond or react to such sexual stimulation or gratification. Masters’ & Johnson’s focus was on the human sexual response cycle, and they established a four-stage model to sexual stimulation; they truly understood the meaning of sex.

Time magazine got it totally right:

By design, Masters of Sex seems like no other television show. It is, after all, about what D. H. Lawrence called the “life urge,” about human intimacy and the search for meaning and understanding among the sexes, rather than another concoction that reflects society’s evident obsessions with death and violence. The show portrays women as equals, flesh and blood equivalents to men, at a time when American culture, at least, treated a female hospital worker like Virginia Johnson as a mere appendage or would-be courtesan. Using humor as well as drama, Masters of Sex dives headlong into the issues of misogyny and sexism, seeing them as lasting and pernicious civil rights issues. While so many TV shows dwell on violence, drugs, psychotic thugs and corrupt cops, Masters of Sex explores the human heart. Amid scenes of naked volunteers testing the boundaries of orgasm in the name of science, there are moments of yearning and even desperation among sexually dysfunctional couples—most of them married—seeking Masters’ and Johnson’s help in expressing themselves intimately.

Unlike oral sex, which is treated as sex’s best kept secret, human sexuality as a whole concept is still treated like a myth. When I first learned about my human sexuality at the ripe old age of 15, I was a page at New York City’s Donnell Library. I was intrigued like Dr. William Masters. Sex is enjoyed by millions, just ask all the members of Ashley Madison, which has grown enormously since it launched in 2001.

The two revolutionary books that came out of the studies,
Human Sexual Response and Human Sexual Inadequacy,
were best-sellers, translated in over 30 languages.

Life should be about enjoyment, not stress, regrets or frustration, or the lack there might be in your sex life. Masters & Johnson did us a favor by shedding light on the Human Sexual Response. The Masters & Johnson model outlined four stages of physiological arousal: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution.

The 1st Stage (the foreplay stage) is the initial Excitement or arousal stage, which starts your sexual energy to take off. The penis starts to harden, and the pussy starts to get very moist. It can be stimulated by a kiss or simply touching or caressing your partner’s genitals, sucking on her breasts or kissing his balls. This jump starts your sexual arousal and ignites your erogenous zones, leading you into the 2nd Stage, the Plateau stage. The clitoris is becoming sensitive and starts to withdraw while the Bartholin glands produce more lubrication. The tissues of the outer third of the vagina swell. It is said that women are the real lucky ones during sexual stimulation because, with the right stimulation, our bodies allow us to have multiple orgasms before hitting the resolution stage, meaning we generally need less (to no) “recoup” time compared to men between orgasms. The 3rd Stages is Orgasm or the conclusion of the plateau phase. This is experienced by both males and females and can result in an increase in vaginal lubrication, a tightening of the vaginal walls, a release of semen, and overall pleasure. As stated, it is during this stage that women can have multiple orgasms, especially with effective stimulation. The 4th Stage is the Resolution stage, which occurs immediately after orgasm. The muscles relax, blood pressure drops, and the body slows from its excited state.

Fact: Sexual stimulation is not a myth or a misnomer, but something that actually does happen to the body during sex. How you get to the arousal stage depends on the individual. But the end result is equally desired; men and women want to achieve an orgasm for sure (OFS)!

Trust me, the porn industry is not worried about people who are against or don’t like sex. The unlimited profit margins speak volumes. The porn industry may lose the occasional fan or viewer; but generally, they have gained members over the years. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry, which is still vibrant, strong, and growing.
